60 Years

Today marks the birthday of one of my best friends. Someone who was always there from the days of old when football was the only interest that we all shared, to later when we became more interested in other aspects of life that did not require kicking a ball for 10 hours a day.

We worked together, lived together and made plenty of mistakes together.

But he was always the one who knew what to do next.

The one that you would go to make sure that the decision you were about to make was the correct one.

And so a few of us became so close, joint at the hip as it were, became indispensable to one another.

As girlfriends started to come into the scene, the world around us began to change, but we kept our bond strong.

Until I chose to move country, because of a girlfriend.

I broke the chain that kept us all together. I was one of the links that stopped the circular movement of that wonderful bond that we had created.

But that didn’t deter him.

He carried on organising events, trips, and get-togethers.

He was the first person I would ring when I bought plane tickets to visit my hometown and the first person I would ring when I landed.

Today would mark his 60th birthday.

Today would have been a fantastic celebration.

Today, we can only celebrate the years that we had together.

Rest in Peace, my dear Friend

Day will break, stars will fall
There’s always something you’ll forget to say
Don’t dismay
True friends never part

We’ll meet again
Trust me my friend
There’s no harm in goodbye
Give me your glass
Follow your heart
Wipe that tear from your eye
Time makes amends
Don’t be afraid
You’ll not let love pass you by
Remember this
True friends never part
